Building Collaboration on Policy and Programs: A National Convening of ITP-Led and ITP-Serving Organizations

The ITPO team gathered in Calgary on October 25th and 26th for the "Building Collaboration on Policy and Programs: A National Convening of ITP-Led and ITP-Serving Organizations" conference. Hosted by the Alberta International Medical Graduate Association (AIMGA), the N4 National Newcomer Navigation Network, and World Education Services, the event brought together internationally trained physicians and representatives from organizations supporting them. Discussions focused on challenges related to licensure, supports and services, ongoing promising initiatives, and future recommendations. At the end of the 2 days, a high level collective action plan on advancing proposed recommendations was arrived at.

"I am happy to be part of this great moment attending The Building Collaboration on Program and Policy – A National Convening of ITP-Led/Serving Organizations Event, where all these organizations collaborate to successfully integrate Internationally Trained Physicians into the Canadian Healthcare system. Proud to be representing #ITPO and thank you #ITPO for always advocating for #InternationallyTrainedPhysicians" Dr Therese Bichay, ITPO

"It was wonderful being part of a group who are passionate about safeguarding the wellbeing of Internationally Trained Physicians(ITPs) and their successful integration into the Canadian Healthcare system. At the end of the day ITPs matter and are essential for the sustainability of the Canadian healthcare. Thank you Makini McGuire-Brown and ITPO for this opportunity." Dr Nava Asad Dohadwala, ITPO

"Canada's health systems face enormous challenges in understanding both the skillsets of newcomer physicians and how those skills can be translated into healthier communities. There are participants from every province and territory here in Calgary talking about the issues, ....... Let's all talk about how that can happen and how we can move forward together in getting newcomer physicians back in front of patients!" Cameron Moser, ACCES Employment

"What do you get when there are 50 international trained physicians and support agencies reps all in one room = magic 🧞‍♀️Our challenge: Setting collective priorities for action on improving pathways to Iicensure in Canada! 🇨🇦 We had an amazing two days with concrete strategic directions to pursue - and - who to partner with to make it happen. We know there is no magic wand 🪄but plenty of reasons to dream BIG. We know Canadians want access to medical professions and care! 👏" Marlies van Dijk, The Pivot Group

Team ITPO looks forward to future collaborative efforts, in our mission to support Internationally Trained Physicians as they navigate the Canadian health care system.
