In this podcast, hosted by Healtheon, ITPO Vice-chair Dr. Mariana da Silva Jardim discusses the challenges of internationally trained physicians.
The shortage of primary care physicians, which contributes to longer wait times in emergency departments and backlogs for specialists, is central to discussions on healthcare improvement in Canada. Internationally trained physicians who are skilled face challenges navigating the Canadian healthcare system as they do not have support and are often misdirected to roles that do not utilize their medical training.
Each province has strict regulations and recognizes training from a few select countries. Recent experience is difficult to maintain as most of these physicians have been seeking entry into a tight system for years, and the cost associated with licensure examinations and residency applications is high.
Creating a licensed clinical assistant pathway to maintain recency, establishing organizations to guide ITPs when they secure immigration, recognizing diverse training experiences, and increasing funding could make ITPs relevant.
For newcomers, the importance of connecting with organizations, understanding the system and having a support system to maintain mental health cannot be overemphasized.
