ITP Assets: Knowledge of International Endemic Diseases
As population migration continues, diseases not previously endemic to Canada will rise. These diseases, while not commonly treated previously by Canadian trained doctors, are commonly treated by ITPs that come from regions where they are endemic. This is why ITPs are #heretoserve
International Endemic Diseases on the Rise in Canada
Endemic Knowledge- Measles
Canada is experiencing an increase in measles cases, with 69 cases identified in 2024. This increase is partly due to unvaccinated immigrants. ITPs can use their experience with treating measles in endemic regions, to help provide culturally sensitive education about the importance of immunization.
Endemic Knowledge-Tuberculosis
The overall incidence of TB in Canada is 4.8 per 100,000 population; but the incidence among those born outside of Canada is 14.4 per 100,000 population. Among those with active TB in Canada, over 1 in 6 were diagnosed with active TB within 2 years of arrival to Canada. ITPs hailing from these countries are accustomed to the clinical management as well as the cultural sensitivities required to encourage patient buy-in and participation in managing their illness.
Endemic Knowledge- Haemoglobinopathies
The incidence and prevalence of hemoglobinopathies among children under 18 in Ontario have been rising likely due to increased immigration rates. ITPs with experience in treating these conditions in their home countries can provide early diagnosis, effective treatment, and tailored public health strategies. They can also help address health care inequalities and ensure better patient outcomes by overcoming language and cultural barriers.
Endemic Knowledge- Sickle Cell Disease
Due to global migration, the prevalence of sickle cell disease in Canada is increasing. People of African, Arab, and Indian backgrounds in Canada are the most affected and can benefit from ITP expertise in treating this condition in high-prevalence countries. Canada has a strong presence of ITPs from the high prevalence source countries for Sickle Cell Disease.
Endemic Knowledge- Malaria
In the past decade, Canada experienced two malaria epidemics, stemming from an outbreak in Punjab India and Central Africa. The influx of immigrants and refugees played a big part in the presence of the epidemic in Canada. ITPs from Africa and India are familiar with treating cases of Malaria often and sometimes virulent strains. They can assist with early diagnosis and effective treatment of malaria in immigrant populations.
